|| Mid-30s/Late-40s Downtown view of Chicago's Grant Park ||

The lost have been found... :)
Through some excellent historical snooping by a reader, the location of the picture below has been deduced to be Chicago's Grant Park

The memorial structure in the foreground of the image would be the original Bennett peristyle via 1917 (today a replica stands in it's exact place in Wrigley Square, which is now claimed by Millennium Park).
The date is still unknown but {due to the make of the sedans within the shot} is estimated to be anywhere within 1934-1947.

|| Atlas Statue ~ Reichstag & Bismarck Memorial ||

1). Kneeling Atlas statue by Berlin sculptor Reinhold Begas.
2). Seen in this photo at its secondary location in the Tiergarten of Berlin, Germany.
3). Originally located in the gardens of the Reichstag, however after a suspicious fire severely damaged the building in 1933, Nazi forces took control of the property; eventually relocating the Atlas and other Begas statues in 1938 to their present day location in the Tiergarten.
4). Photo is taken after relocation (post-1938).
5). Exact date unknown.

{{If you have any past or present photos of this or other monuments, statues, etc, send them here to anreiseventure@gmail.com and you might be featured. See sidebar for more detail. ^-^}}

|| Downtown Snapshot of Unknown City ||

1). Unknown assumed American city.
2). Date guessed to be between early-thirties to mid-forties.
3). On closer inspection of photo, I noticed a Greek Revival memorial or public building of some kind in the background.
4). I attempted to identify the city by way of learning the location of the Parthenon-esque structure but was without success (I think we can safely rule out Nashville's Parthenon replica ).
5). Please click on photo to view detail.

If you see anything that rings a bell, please comment.
Guesses are welcome & appreciated. :)

|| The Alsace-Lorraine Memorial, France||

1). The Alsace-Lorraine Memorial in Picardie, France.
2). The inscription on the memorial reads: "To the heroic soldiers of France / Defenders of the Fatherland and of Justice / Glorious liberators of Alsace-Lorraine".
3). I cannot be sure whether this is the original Alsace-Lorraine memorial, or the post-war reproduction.
4). You can read a nicely summarized history of the site and monuments here.

|| National Memorial Arch Valley Forge ||

1). Construction photo of the National Memorial Arch at Valley Forge in 1923.*

* Date given on back of photo. However, the National Park Service website states that the official dedication ceremony took place in June of 1917, so the photo is likely misdated.

|| Post-War European Trip ||

1). Ladies on a hike. Location guessed to be somewhere in Italy.
2). Pope Pius XII at his summer residency, Castel Gandolfo.
3). Statue of a crying woman, possibly in an Italian cemetery.
4). View of an unknown Italian abbey, church, cathedral, etc.

***Note:
Because of the nature of how I found these photos, it is quite possible that one or more are not, in actuality, depicting Post-war Italy.
I do my best to research what I can and try at a guess but my knowledge is limited.
This is where you can help. :) If you think you know where and what is being depicted in these photos, leave a comment and/or send in a picture of yourself at the place in question and I'll post it.

Anreise: What & Why

Hello and welcome to the official embarking of The Anreise Venture!

If you are reading this post I assume that you desire to know the what and why of this project, and I will consent to oblige in as briefly a manner as I am able.

>>=<<

In the first place, I am a young thing with an insatiable curiosity of the Past, who has likewise been an avid collector of vintage photographs for a few years now. While I'm fond of the sentimental photos of babies, lovers, and laughing folk, I've always been drawn to photos of people in and around houses, building, statues, monuments, etc.

Since often these photos are found at the bottom of a basket with nearly no identification, I was always left wondering where, when, and whether or not the structures in the images were still in existence. This project is a means to give names to the nameless and add to the narrative of the structures/places of the Past, through a collective effort of sharing photos, identifying their location, and establishing the current state(is the structure still there, have things changed since the time in the old photo, etc).

Ideally, I hope the readers of this blog will take an active part in identifying locations and submitting both vintage photos of locations, as well as photos of themselves at the locations that have been previously identified.

But if nothing else, I hope this blog stokes the flames of curiosity and inspires readers to learn more about History and our place in it.

Here's to getting there. <3
